Sport HistoryAthletics Read moreAthletics CloseTSS TRACK AND FIELDTrack and Field is a sport where training and competitions occur in Semester 2 (July-November) for the GPS season, however, many TSS athletes participate in the Qld Athletics/Australian Athletics season which begins in October and concludes in March at the Australian Junior Track and Field Championships. Although it can seem like a sport only for the fittest, fastest and strongest, any TSS student who wishes to participate in Track and Field is welcome regardless of their ability. In order to be considered a member of the Track and Field team it is expected that all athletes adopt our core behaviours of Commitment and Discipline. Emphasis is placed on athletes understanding what their potential is, working hard to achieve this and enjoying what they do at the same time. This occurs through goal setting as well as a regular, structured training which includes training sessions at the School as well as the Griffith Uni Athletics Track. Currently the focus for the TSS Track and Field program to find and retain the best coaches on the Gold Coast. Secondly, the priority will move towards supporting our coaches and athletes so they can reach their potential. It is through this consistent and tough training regime it is hoped that a number of individual athletes will attain Regional, State, National representation and that the team as a whole challenge for the GPS Premiership. As a team, TSS has won 5 Track and Field premierships since 1918 with the last being in 1930. Basketball Read moreBasketball CloseTSS Basketball Overview Basketball is a popular Term Three sport that provides for all levels of student participation. We have approximately 30 teams competing in the Queensland GPS competition from Years Five to Twelve. Basketball provides many opportunities from the Preparatory School to the high-performance program in the Senior School. TSS Basketball works with students to develop a progressive and dynamic program to advance the boys with their Basketball aspirations. Many students have achieved their dreams of representing their State and even Australia, along with several players achieving USA scholarship opportunities. The TSS 1st Open Team is a testament to hard work and determination. Boys who achieve this pinnacle represent the Red, White and Blue with pride. The Southport School has tasted success, winning the Queensland GPS Basketball title two times and a School National Title in 2012. TSS Cricket is a pathway to the professional level of the sport providing the opportunity for boys to represent both their State and Country. The TSS cricket department works hard with coaches to develop a progressive and dynamic program to advance the boys in their cricketing aspirations. Cricket is a popular summer sport and TSS Cricket provide for all levels of participation, with over twenty eight teams in the School. TSS Cricket offers many opportunities including the T20 Blast for boys in the Preparatory School and In2Cricket Program for Junior Preparatory boys. Additionally, TSS boys from Yr5-12 have access to progressive training and compete at a high level of schoolboy cricket each week in term 1, under the Queensland GPS competition which provides for a wide range of cricket abilities. Selection as a member of the TSS 1st XI Cricket Team is a testament to hard work and determination. Boys who achieve this pinnacle do not achieve this without toil, vision and sweat. They don the Baggy Red, White & Blue and represent the ‘Firsts’ with pride. The Southport School has had great success in GPS Cricket winning this title 23 times. TSS has won the coveted GPS Cricket Premiership most recently in 2017, 2018, 2019, 2021 & 2023. Moreover, the TSS 1st XI have won the coveted State Cup 2009, 2010, 2011, 2014, 2017 & 2021 as well as touring each year to play challenging opposition. We are fortunate to play NSW Cricket U17 Training Squad each year in Sept holidays and tour in January each year with high performing Cricket Schools such as Kings College (Sydney), Hale School (Perth) and Scotch Oakburn (Tas). The sessions include skills remediation, strength and conditioning and many games/ camps to look forward to. Additionally, there is a host of training conducted at the school by Gold Coast Cricket and Qld Cricket each season. Peruse the Updated Training Times and Upcoming Calendar of Events links for the latest information Club Cricket With GPS Rugby and Basketball finished mid-September each year and the commencement of GPS Cricket Saturday games not starting until late January the following year… TSS Cricketers will have the availability to play much of the club season and have access to more game experience in regular Cricket to progress their talents. Club cricket starts in Sept-Oct each year. Club under 11’s-Seniors is played on Saturdays. TSS Cricket looks to compliment club cricket whereby we encourage TSS boys to participate to experience game play coupled with expert specialist coaching at TSS. This camp is also ideal for students who are looking at starting out playing cricket. This camp caters for a wide range of ages (year 4-12) and various abilities. The December TSS Cricket ‘Skills’ camp normally in the 2nd week of December has a focus on skill development with video analysis backed with expert coaching of each player's batting and bowling technique. This camp caters for a wide range of ages (year 4-12)/ cricketers outside of TSS and various abilities. This camp assists players to have their game ready for the upcoming GPS Season and State Carnivals. The Pre-GPS January TSS Cricket camp normally in the week before school comes back has a focus on skill refinement and game sense strategies with expert team coaches then practise matches vs GPS Schools. This camp is for all Yr5-12 GPS Cricketers only to be run at TSS Senior Campus.
Cross Country Read moreCross Country CloseTSS CROSS COUNTRYCross Country at TSS is a Semester 1 sport (January – June). Although the Cross Country season officially commences at the conclusion of the Summer sports (end of Term 1), preseason commences from the beginning of the school year and culminates at the GPS Cross Country Championships in June. Any TSS student who wishes to participate in Cross Country is welcome regardless of their running ability. In order to be considered a member of the Crossy team it is expected that all runners adopt our core behaviours of Commitment and Discipline. Emphasis is placed on runners achieving their potential and enjoying their running. This occurs through goal setting as well as a regular, structured training which includes training sessions at the School as well as around the Gold Coast. Additionally, during the season, the squad undertakes an intensive 3 day running camp to develop team cohesion as well as individual fitness. With time the TSS Cross Country program will develop in to one of the strongest school programs within Queensland and certainly within the GPS competition. Golf Read moreGolf CloseThe Southport SchoolElite & Developmental Golf Program 2015Last year was a great year for TSS Golf with the team winning the Net title for the Queensland Intercollegiate Golf Association (QIGA) and our own Tristan Nichols was Player of the year accepting a golf scholarship to West Virginia University in the United States. In addition, we created our first primary level developmental squad, which we hope to build upon in 2015. Our TSS Director of Golf, PGA Pro Grant Garrison will again coach our team in 2015 and continue building our golf program. He is also available for private tuition as he has his own Golf School at the Gold Coast County Club. Feel free to contact him with any questions at 0421 287 826. This will be a fun year as we expand the golf program to involve more players and more outings. We will have 10 players from the senior school combined with 6 players from TSS primary. This 16-player squad will represent our school in 4 of the Queensland Intercollegiate Golf Events, which are played on Mondays. Practice and play will be on Fridays after school from 3:30-5.30pm with sessions being held on campus at the River Range next to the Rowing Centre along with regular outings to various golf courses, please see schedule below which is subject to change. Attendance to practice session is not compulsory but encouraged. Team players must have an official Golf Link handicap to compete in QIGA events with the lowest handicap players being selected to play in the actual Tournaments. This year, we will offer 2 - 3 day Golf Camps during the school breaks to provide additional training for our team. The dates are 7-9 April & 30 June - 2 July. The emphasis this year will be on improving technically, physically, and mentally. The consistent cycle of learning, preparing and performing will be the theme of this year’s program. The Southport School Gymnastics club is a Men’s Artistic Gymnastics program, catering for boys age 5 and up. The club caters for both recreational and competitive gymnastics. Boys in gymnastics classes are taught the fundamentals of body control through the three important aspects of flexibility, physical strength and body coordination. With these skills, boys can increase their level of fitness and agility; a beneficial aspect to any sport. TSS Gymnastics Club’s Director, provides an opportunity for each and every boy to achieve to their potential in this sport through the use of Men’s Gymnastics six (6) apparatus; Floor, Pommel Horse, Rings, Vault, Parallel and High Bar. Each individual gymnast training ranges from 1 to 18 hours per week. TSS won the inaugural Head of the River in 1918 and has go on to win it over 20 times with the most recent success in 2018 (100 years after the first Head of the River win) under the guidance of Olympian and TSS Old Boy Duncan Free and Stuart Paton. Video created by Charlie Cox – member of the 2019 1st VIII Rowing is a sport that takes place in Term 4 (preseason training) and Term 1 (racing season) of the school year, where students from Year 8 to 12 are welcome to participate in the program. The program has roughly 240 rowers participating where 6 Year 10 Quads, 3 Year 11 & Open VIII’s race for points on Head of the River day for the Old Boys Cup and the 1st VIII also contest the 6 other GPS School for the O’Conner Cup. Regattas are held out at Wyaralong Dam which is location 15 minutes out Beaudesert. This is an amazing facility with a 10 lane course with separate competitor and spectator headlands with a amazing views of the entire course. Approximately 500 boys are involved in the sport with many more participating in roles such as assistant referees (touch judges), ball boys and becoming qualified referees. With an aim to improve fitness, skill and overall enjoyment of the game of Rugby, the TSS Rugby Department has worked hard with coaches to develop a seamless program as the boys advance through the years. Obviously the pinnacle of TSS Rugby is to be a member of the 1st XV Rugby team, and putting on the traditional 'red, white & blue' jersey of the 'Firsts' is a dream most boys at TSS have. Along the journey to the 1st XV, touring is an integral part of building the spirit of TSS Rugby spirit. As well as domestic tours to Sydney, Armidale, Sunshine Coast and Toowoomba each year, TSS has also recently toured to Hong Kong 2008,09,10,11 & 2017, France for RWC 2007, NZ RWC 2011, England RWC 2015 (video below), Japan for Sanix Youth Tournament (2nd) 2005, Chile-Argentina-Uruguay 2017 and plans are already in place for Japan RWC 2019!! In recent years, The Southport School has had great success in the GPS Rugby. The school has a long history in sailing with over thirty State, National and World Championship winners and offers students at the school an opportunity to learn the basic skills, through to racing and competition within the Queensland Schools community. The sports program at the school offers sailing in Term 1 and 4 and high performance opportunities throughout the year. The Start Sailing program is open to all year groups and the first intake is for Prep students coordinated by Mr Massey. These sessions run on selected afternoons or on Saturdays. The Better Sailing group is for students who have completed the Start Sailing course and wish to become involved in Racing. These run after school with internal competitions on selected Saturdays throughout 1st and 4th term with an opportunity for selection into a lower team to represent the club. The Senior Racing Squad competes locally and travels to regattas, the focus of the program being the Term 4 Fleet Racing series held in Brisbane. This is a selective program open to Elite sailors who have displayed high standards through the school program or elsewhere. From this squad students are picked for the school Open Representative team to compete at inter-school level. Open Practice is available to those students and club members who own their own boats and compete at regional, state or national level. The shed currently includes several Lasers, Optimists and 29ers and students are encouraged to look into boat ownership at the conclusion of the Better Sailing Program. Open Practice is currently offered on Thursday afternoon. The school also offers sailing in year 7-9 HPE lessons and this is open to boys who may have other commitments on a Saturday. This is an excellent opportunity to learn the basic skills and hopefully join the racing program at a later date. TSS Coaching StructureThe TSS Sailing Club program is run under the auspices of Yachting Australia© and is an accredited Discover Sailing Centre, this makes TSS unique in Australia as a training facility. Our coaches understand that children have different goals with regards to their sailing. These range from sailing for enjoyment, as a challenge, and towards the preparation for club, regional, State or National competition. All sailors are valued equally in the TSSSC Program and are treated as such. As coaches we understand that we have the potential to influence and enrich a young person’s life and that Sailing provides an opportunity for lifelong participation and enjoyment. The TSS Swim program provides the opportunity for male and female swimmers of all abilities to participate in the sport of swimming. Our coaches understand that children have different goals with regards to their swimming – these goals range from swimming for health and fitness to the preparation for local, regional, State or National competition. All swimmers are valued equally to the TSS Program and are treated as such. Recent achievements The swimming program here at TSS continues for 12 months of the year. With access to two heated pools we have the ability to provide a program that caters for all levels throughout the year.
