Match Report
The Southport School Racing Team vs  Schools Pacer Champs
On: Sunday, 11 Feb 2018
Venue: tbc

The TSS sailing program is going from strength to strength in 2018 with over 130 boys signed up to participate in one of the range of different programs we offer, ranging from absolute beginners to the Racing Team. A very successful season launch and Blessing of the Fleet was held at the Boat Shed last Friday, which highlighted also the important work of Friends of Sailing, which is so critical to the success of our programs.

After several weeks of training, Sunday 11th February saw the first outing for the TSS Sailing Racing team in round 1 of the Schools Pacer Championships at Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron, Manly. After two boys had to withdraw with illness, we took up a team of 20 boys and 10 boats, supported as always by a loyal support crew of parents.

It was a hot day on the water with light winds that strengthened throughout the day. In the morning the boys took part in four Fleet Races. TSS crews finished in first place in three of these races, and when the points were totaled, the overall lead for the competition was shared by the crews of TSS 34 (Tom Wright and Foster Lane) and TSS 33 (Oscar Weatherseed and Ethan Donnelly). Six of the top ten crews were from TSS, which represented a great start to the season. Mention should also be made of crews TSS 2 (Max Hateley and Jackson Fray), TSS 4 (Tom McGregor and Brandon Rerrie) and TSS 22 (Jack O'Hagan and Lachlin Iland) who were all taking part in their first regattas as skipper and crew respectively and performed very creditably.

All but three crews returned home after the morning's racing was complete, and three crews remained for the afternoon's Teams Racing. Whilst fleet racing is very much about sailing quickly and getting over the line first, in teams racing, the racing becomes much more tactical, where the objective is to stop your opponent winning as much as winning yourself. The crews in the team of three boats need to work together to ensure that their opponents are thwarted, and as such there are many more hairy moments. Despite some slightly kamikaze tactics at times, causing coach Tom Cunich some angst, the team of TSS 31 (Connor Pilcher and Harry Stapleton), TSS 32 (Xavier Doerr and Zach Miller-Wright) and TSS 33 (Oscar Weatherseed and Ethan Donnelly) prevailed in 3 out of their 5 races. This was our first venture into Teams Racing for several years and so was a new experience for these boys, which they thoroughly enjoyed!

Onward into next week!
